Word Problems on NTSE exam

A wide range of problems is asked in NTSE that are mentioned in words. There are about 4-5 questions asked in NTSE that fall under this category. These questions are based on simple mathematics and may well be asked in the Mathematics section. Problems however are not asked in a straightforward manner.

Main concepts are:

Age related problems
Distance and Speed related problems
Unitary Method
Ratio and Proportion
Simple Equations

Age Related Problems

Ages for two people are given in relative manner and the absolute age will need to be found. The age can be found by writing down the relation in the form of simple equations and solving.

Example:
Pramod is twice as old as Sohan. Three years ago, he was three times as old as Sohan. How old is Pramod now? (NTSE MAT 2009)

Distance and Speed related problems

This is simple find one of distance covered, time taken or speed of any object given other information. Main formulae to remember are

Distance = speed x time

Speed = distance / time

Time = distance / speed

Also please take care of the units. Minutes may need to be converted to hours or seconds and km may need to be converted to meters. So in the formulae above use same units.

Example:

A train is moving with a speed of 92.4 km/hr. How many meters will it cover in 10 minutes. (NTSE MAT 2009)

Unitary Method

These types of questions simply give information about x number of items and asks for information about y number of items. We always solve by deriving the information for 1 item and multiplying by y.

Example:

The average salary of 20 workers in an office is Rs. 1900 per month. If manager’s salary is added the average salary becomes Rs. 2000 per month. What is the manager’s annual salary? (NTSE MAT 2009)

Ratio and Proportion

Questions on ratio and proportion are simple where either a ratio is given and actual quantities are asked or quantities are given and ratio is asked. In solving these questions sometimes formulae related to area of shapes, speed time and distance and clocks and calendars are useful.

Example:

The ratio between the length and breadth of a rectangular field is 5:4. If the breadth is 20m less than the length, the perimeter of the field is? (NTSE MAT 2009)

Simple Equations

Whatever does not fall in the categories above falls into this category. Main idea here is to clearly understand the problem and put it into equation. There are three steps. Step 1 pick an unknown item and denote it as x. Step 2, build the relation mentioned in question. Step 3, solve for x. Sometimes in the question x is not what is asked, we need to put the value of x in another equation and solve it (Ratio and proportion example above)

Example:

There were monkeys and pigeons on a tree. There were 20 heads and 48 feet. How many monkeys were there on the tree? (NTSE MAT 2009)

Most word problems are not very difficult if you carefully read it and clearly form an equation and then solve. Practice again is the key.

Workshop at British Council Library August 20, 2011

Every first thing has its own charm. Same was with the workshop at British Council Library conducted by Yogita Bhalla and Ashish Bisht (simplylearnt.com exam experts). We spoke in code and understood in code as well. Lots of great codes cracked and lots of mysteries unearthed.

We learnt how messages can be cleverly concealed within other messages, we figured out how to scrambled messages so no one would know. We talked backwards.

We learnt how sending secret messages was the most important weapon during the first and the second world war and about ENIGMA machines. We made our own ENIGMA machines and took home start sending secret messages.

We also foiled the encoded (secret) plans of a theif who thought he was clever. Using our "code wheels" we decoded his secret plan but we did not go catch him :)

Finally we learnt how computers make buying things online using a credit card safe using the RSA code.

We really had fun!

Types of questions

On NTSE there are following questions based on words.
1. Picking odd one out
2. Resolving Analogies
3. Finding the next word in the given series

How to solve

Good vocabulary is the key here. Start immediately on building your vocabulary. Some tips are:
- Anything you listen or read, pay attention to words and identify which group does a word belong
E.g. The Andes (nature) range is the world's highest (adjective) mountain range outside of the continent of Asia (continent)
- Read a newspaper daily
- Watch Discovery Channel daily, they talk about various subjects useful for building vocabulary

Odd one out Classes

Main idea behind picking an odd one out is to identify a common property. Below mentioned classes is a good start. Please understand that they are not exhaustive and you need to remain creative in your thinking. Again! PRACTICE a lot.

Individual Classes
All the set of words given that belong to one class are considered correct.
Examples
1. Nose, Eyes, Skin, Tongue, Teeth
Nose, Eyes, Skin, Tongue belong to one class i.e. sense organs whereas teeth are not sense organs

Singular Plural Classes
All the set of words are singular and one word is plural.
Example
1. Sun, Moon, Earth, Venus, Milky Way
Sun, Moon, Earth, Venus are all singular entities whereas Milky Way is a galaxy of stars.

Grammatical Classes
All words have one grammatical form(nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives etc.) and one word belongs to the other form.
Example
1. Here, near, where, there, nowhere
“Where” is an interrogative word whereas others are not

Synonyms
All the words mean the same thing except one.
Example
1. Ornate, Pleasant, Decorate, Beautify, Adorn
Except “Pleasant” all the words mean the same thing

Properties of a Class
The grouping or classification happens on some property of a class
Example
1. Root, Tree, Flower, Branch, Fruit
Only “Root” remain below the ground, all others are above the ground.

Parent Child Classes
This is a broad class where classification happens on the basis of the origin of the items mentioned in the list.
Example
Curd, Butter, Cheese, Cream, Molasses
Molasses is made of sugar and all others are made from mil

Word Series

Word series is simpler if you have mastered Odd one out. The series is based on classes as explained above. Identify the class and pick a related word from the choices.
Example
1. Lady Finger, Bottle-gourd, Pumpkin, Brinjal
a. Turnip
b. Onion
c. Raddish
d. Cauliflower

Class: Growing above the ground
Correct answer Cauliflower

2. Mumbai, Chennai, Patna, Raipur
a. Nagpur
b. Ahmedabad
c. Dispur
d. Varanasi

Class: Capitals of the states
Correct Answer: Dispur (Capital of Assam)

Analogies

In analogy tests the relationship between two given words is established and then applied to the other words. Identifying the type of relationship is the first step in solving such problems.

Action Object Relationship
Example: Heat is to Pan as Drink is to...
a. Hunger
b. Thirst
c. Fruit
d. Water
Ans. (d): The relationship between the given words is that ‘heat’ is the action and ‘pan’ is the specified object of action. Similarly ‘drink’ is the action and ‘water’ is the specified object.

Association Relationship
Example: Glamour is to Stardom as Colour is to....
a. Rainbow
b. Shades
c. Art
d. Painting
Ans. (d). As glamour is associated with stardom so is colour with painting.

Antonym Relationship
Example: INTROVERT: EXTROVERT
a. ANGLE: TANGENT
b. EXTREME: INTERIM
c. AGAINST: FAVOUR
d. ACTION: LAW
Ans. (c). The related words are opposite in meaning.

Cause and Effect Relationship
Example: INJURY: PAIN
a. GRADES: MERUT
b. THUNDER: LIGHTNING
c. ROTATE: CHURNING
d. MATTER: LABOUR
Ans. (b). Injury is the cause of pain and so is thunder the cause of lightning.

Degree Relationship
Example: Tepid is to Hot as...is to Wail.
a. Sob
b. Shout
c. Smile
d. Calm
Ans. (a). Tepid is less hot and so also the lower degree of wail is sob.

Grammatical Relationship
Example: Clever is to Beautiful as Sour is to...
a. Lemon
b. Cunning
c. Loathing
d. Taste
Ans. (b). The related words are Adjectives.

Obvious Relationship
Example: Mt. EVEREST: NEPAL
a. MEXICO: SOUTH AMERICA
b. K2: CHIAN

Ans. (d): Mt. Everest is in Nepal and so is Ahmedabad in Gujarat

Part Whole Relationship
Example: MAN: MAMMAL

Ans. (c). Man is a part of the whole species of mammal so is an offspring of the whole family.

Purpose Relationship

Ans. (c). The purpose of institution is to impart education and the purpose of medication is quick recuperation (recovery).

Ans. (a). Summer season is immediately followed by monsoon (rainy season) and evening is immediately followed by dusk.

Synonym Relationship
Example: INDENT: REQUEST

Ans. (b). The related words have the same meaning.

Volume Relationship
Example: GALLONS: SWIMMING POOL

Ans. (a). Gallons of water is needed to fill a swimming pool and large number of spectators can be admitted into an auditorium.

NTSE MAT - Solving Direction Sense Questions

There are four directions North, South, East and West.

The word NEWS came from North, East, West and South.

There are four regions: North-East (I); South-East (IV); North-West (II); South-West (III). The directions OP, OS, OQ are North East direction; North-West direction; South-West and South-East direction.

You must distinguish between the regions and directions i.e. between North-East region and North-East direction.

If you move with your face east-wards, your left hand is towards north and your right hand is towards south. Similarly the positions of the directions of the hands can be fixed when you move in any of the other three directions.

Solving Questions

Drawing the questions on a paper

To solve the question, first draw the direction figure on paper. Mark the starting point. After that move carefully according to the directions given in the question. The most important aspect here is to draw it carefully and take care of the movements. Putting arrows in the line diagram is useful.

Movements are described in three ways

1. Left or Right – You just need to be careful of where the last arrow is pointing.

2. Movement in a particular direction – Again direction of the last arrow is of importance

3. Movement at a certain angle – mostly these are defined in terms of 0 , 90 and 45

Solving the question

The questions are usually of following types:

a. Find the final direction – this is easy if you have the correct diagram made and you remember the directions correctly.

b. Finding the distance from start point – Once a correct diagram is made then you can use simple geometry to find out the correct answer. Pythagoras theorem is very useful here because many diagrams result into right angle triangles.
Combination of distance from start point and final direction – the above two strategies are useful in solving this.

NTSE MAT - Number Series

Number Series is one of the most important topics in NTSE. This involves picking an odd one out, finding analogies, number series or finding the missing number. The questions do not involve heavy maths only great observation. So with great practice you can pick up patterns fast and without solving.

Described below are some important patterns seen among questions from this topic in NTSE. Basic number series can be formed by applying some operation on the previous number or applying operations on a series existing naturally like whole numbers, even or odd numbers, natural numbers etc.

These are mentioned in the increasing order of their importance.

Mathematical Operations

This is the most important pattern in the number series questions. The most favourite among these are square and cubes. Few examples are Squares and Cubes, addition, subtraction, multiplication

How to identify the pattern
1. The series based on squares and cubes must be increasing at a very high rate.
2. Many of the questions in multiplication follows a rule n x (last number) +- n

Examples
4, 9, 24, 69, __
Here n = 3 so missing number will be 204

Jumping in Natural Order

You can count this one as a part of Mathematical Operations but I decided to keep it separate. Numbers appear in the natural order but some numbers are skipped in between.

How to identify the pattern
The sequence in the series must be following some pattern like +2, +3 or some other higher number.

Examples
2, 7, 12, 17, __
Missing number will be 22 as we are jumping 5 numbers in between two numbers in the series

Jumping in Reverse Order

This is same as above only skipping happens in reverse order.

How to identify the pattern
The sequence in the series must be following some pattern like -2, -3 or some other higher number.

Examples
25, 22, 19, 16, __
Missing number will be 13 as we are jumping 3 numbers in reverse order between two numbers

Combination of Two Series / Alternating Series

Here two series are mixed up into one. This is the one when you cannot find a straight pattern.

How to identify the pattern
Generally these series as a whole will not be following any sequence but the alternate numbers will be following a sequence which can be formed by using any of the patterns above.

Examples
3, 7, 6, 5, 9, 3, 12, __

Here there are two series, in one series there are multiples of 3 and in other the numbers are jumping in reverse order by a gap of 2, so missing number will be 1

NTSE MAT - Playing with the Alphabet

NTSE has many questions based on the English Alphabet. These involve picking an odd one out, finding analogies and alphabet series. Solving these questions means just thinking about the English Alphabet in an objective manner.

When solving such questions, always keep handy the alphabet sequence (in natural and reverse order) and their position below it on a piece of paper. Described below are some important patterns seen among questions from this topic in NTSE.

These are mentioned in the decreasing order of their importance.

Jumping in Natural Order

Letters appear in the natural order but some letters are skipped in between. e.g. ACE, natural order sequence skipping 1 letter in between.
The number of letters skipped have its own pattern. e.g. 2 each, 3 each or 1, 2, 3 ...(i.e. increasing natural numbers) or 1, 3, 5, 7... (i.e. increasing odd numbers)

Sample Question,
1. ADG 2. HKN 3. RUX 4. EFG
O one out is EFG

Jumping in Reverse Order

This is same as above only skipping happens in reverse order. i.e. ECA, skips 1 letter in reverse order.

Sometimes some common letters are placed and the above mentioned pattern is seen around those. e.g.
JOPK, BOPC, QOPR

Repititions

In the given sequence of letters, some letters repeat themselves and that is a distinguishing pattern.
Sample Question:
SSTU, MMNO, AABC, KLMN
Odd one out is KLMN
Here for all others the first two letters are repeating and the following is a sequence of consecutive letters.

Miscellaneous

Vowels and Consonents - Letter series can be made of vowels and consonents arranged in a certain pattern. e.g. first letter is a vowel followed by three consecutive letters, or a group contains one consonent and two repeating vowels.
Letter Patterns - Letters can be defined by their pattern. e.g. Between CS, EV, OU only EV is formed by straight lines. Between TVL, FEH, KCW only KCW has one letter that is curved

SL: Tell us about yourself? What are you currently doing?

Siva: I had completed my B.Tech from JNTU Univesity, Kakinada. I am now doing M.Tech in NIT Trichy

SL: When did you start preparing for GATE?

Siva: I had appeared for the GATE 2008 exam and had got an AIR 80. I was sure of getting into the IIT, but instead got a seat in NIT Trichy. But, I had always wanted to be in the IIT and that's why I decided to re-appear for the GATE exam in 2010. I started preparing seriously in the month of December, though after that my second semester started and I could not totally focus on GATE preparation.

SL: What was your strategy for preparation?

Siva: I read the standard text books and prepared notes from them. I generally use my own notes when I study so I read my notes thoroughly....its enough to get below 100

SL: What’s your message to other GATE aspirants?

Siva: Please don't mugg up the books. Read the concept thoroughly. Don't put in guesses in your answer sheet, it will give negative marks..... I had done a great mistake in GATE 2010 - I ticked the answers for 98 marks though I wasn't sure of most of them. I believe devoted preparation for 3 months is enough to get good rank. And don't worry about the fact that the no. of students appearing for the GATE are increasing year to year; it does not a matter at all.. the top ranks will not get effected by the bulk of members attempting. So don't worry and ALL THE BEST!!

what's new at SimplyLearnt

Well, the number of subscribers have gone up at SL manyfolds - thanks to the new proposition of Plan, Discuss and Improve for any entrance exam under the sun.

The planning part is still getting worked upon - as students are given more of a rigid plan - not something that they can be flexible with (going to change very soon). Discussion has kicked in mostly in form of user created study groups - some examples, and SL study groups on various examinations.

The Improvement part has started to chip in with the more thorough diagnostics tests and detailed results - check for example.

We are reasonably satisfied with our work so far, however, next two months shall show some very interesting sides of our platform - so keep checking more.

BTW, a very Happy Diwali to all the readers of this blog.

It's been sometime that we talked on this blog - well actually we went into an introspective/execution mode. We have been thinking on how to best solve the needs of a student preparing for any kind of entrance test. After few focus groups, lots of discussion and overdosage of coffee - we came to a conclusion:

We want SimplyLearnt to become the default ladder to a student's entrance success! - it does not matter what entrance he/she is preparing for. So, what we allow them to do is:

PLAN using our study plans, DISCUSS by joining various study groups and IMPROVE using our diagnostic tests (soon to be launched)!

Yeah! that's right - no big deal if a zillionth blog has been started by someone. Well, I used to think the same way - till a series of events happened:

1. I read The Mouse Driver Chronicles (a must read for all wannabe or existing entrepreneurs)
2. talked to a dear friend Sameer of Morpheus ventures - an eternal entrepreneur
3. received complaints from series of friends (1,2, ... etc) that SimplyLearnt looks a mechanical website without real ppl behind.

So! here I am - breaking my self imposed cocoon to let everyone know what is it to be a product company in the world full of services. So, what can you expect out of this blog:
